wtf is s.ytimg.com? (You Tube)
« on: December 11, 2008, 03:20:49 PM »
I'm having trouble connecting to You Tube every now and then; when this happens I see in my status bar
"Read s.ytimg.com" and then it just hangs...  Can't find much about this searching for s.ytimg.com, except that it has something to do with detecting a users webcam.  It's becoming quite annoying  >:(

ytimg - youtube images?
I didn't know YouTube could detect webcams. (I know Adobe's Flash player does, though.)
Facebook and Amazon (to name but two) seem to have a similar concepts, and use underlying domains, respectively fbcdn.net and images-amazon.com. Why? I don't really know.

Yeah it's the Flash player; if you open a video on YT and right click and select settings, it looks like by default this s.ytimg.com can access your camera and mic...  Why would I want that??? (I turned it off)

Looking at the HTML sources, s.ytimg.com seems to be a place where youtube loads static image content.

The hanging has probably nothing to do with the server, it just happens concurrently.
