One more:
Side chaining in FL Studio 9

1. Route (for instance) bass to first mixer track and kick to second.

2. Select 2nd mixer track, then right-click small gray arrow at the first track. Choose "SideChain to this track"

3. Select 1st mixer track (with bass on it). Add Fruity Limiter there, a) switch to compressor b) select side chain source c)adjust threshold, ratio etc. It should be working now and look like:

Side chain VST compressors (and other multi audio input plugins) are also can be used. You should go to its settings and map audio inputs. In case of Density mk II "auto map" worked just fine.

Its actually very simple! I find it much easier than using the peak controller!

  • It's not a question of knowing, but believing.

So side-chaining is mostly just used for limiting and compression? Whats the difference between side-chaining the channel and just routing the channel?

Purple,
Side-chaining is an automation method. It is generally used on basslines or pads to make them duck in and out with the kick so the Kick has room to breathe. I'm not entirely sure what the Fruity Limiter is actually doing.

If you route to the channel then a certain amount of that sound will go through. If you side-chain to that channel what will happen instead is no sound will go through, but the Mixer will look at the volume of the sound that is coming into. It will not let it through though.

I'm actually a bit ashamed that I didn't know about this sooner. I'm addicted to the Peak Controller... IN FACT, I like to multi-band-sidechain, so I even prefer it for most applications -- that way I can use the peak controller to control not just overall volume but specific frequencies. I guess I'm a control freak.

<--- has never used side chaining.  most of his kicks and bass land on the same place
