How to automate non-native plugins
« on: January 05, 2012, 03:41:23 PM »
I had trouble finding any information on this, then a youtube comment pointed me in the right direction.
And i just thought i should share it with you guys, just in case someone needed it.

So here's how :)

Simply click on the little arrow in the top left corner of the wrapper window.

Then click browse parameters.

Then the browser shows you all the parameters for the chosen plugin.
Then just right-click on the parameter you want to automate.
And then you choose how you want to automate it.

and there you go :) hope it helps someone.

Another (and maybe easier?) way is to tweak the knob you want to automate and then go to Tools - Last Tweaked.

It would be easier than to manually search for the knob. but at least you can see all the knobs :) And as stated earlier, didn't find much info on this :)

btw thanks for the tip :)

Well, the other nice aspect of your method (which I also use) is that when you tweak another knob you will see the controller highlighted in the browser.

Another nice thing is that this method, as opposed to the "last tweaked" method, allows you to see settings which aren't in the plugin GUI at all. Some plugins have things you can change "behind the scenes" which you'll only find this way.

I had found a Youtube video on this topic a few months back, and it revolutionized that way that I use Massive and Reaktor.  "Browse Parameters"....who knew?

Finding the parameters manually definitely helps you learn more about the VST you're playing with also. Alot of the methods to make magic I discovered  were from simply finding some random parameter, learning what it did, and doing it again with some other knob or effect.

And to have control of those previously unknown parameters, and automate them in a track, add the complexity and edge that set your music on a higher level. Combine that with proper techniques in mixing and mastering and you've got a professional sound on a single computer. Isn't it a wonderful thing?
