The Flipside Contests Presents

"Human Instruments Songwriting Competition"

Sponsored By:

Generate a range of sounds using only your voice (voice synths, drums, percussion, bass) and any DAW and FX and put them into a song.

Using your voice, either live or recorded samples, you can make an infinite number of different sounds.  There are many tools to use to edit/alter/mangle these sounds; from things like basic Channel Settings manipulations of ADSR envelopes and filters, to using FX like Slicers, Wave Traveller, sound mangling FX, EQ's, Distortion, Reverb/Echo, etc.

Even if you only have a cheap mic, or headset and can't sing - you can still enter this contest and potentially win.  Use EQ, compression, effects... and your imagination to mold the sounds into anything you want. You might start off recording a few short percussive sounds to use as drums. You might try recording yourself singing a single note and then playing it like a synth. Even if you can't sing, you can use tools like Vocodex, Newtone and Pitcher, or Autotune. You could even use a vocal sample as an impulse in Fruity Convolver. With the right effects, you can make your voice sound like anything you want... and that's the whole idea! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE ABLE TO SING AT ALL TO DO THIS!

If you don't have a microphone at all, that is no problem.  There are other way to record samples of your voice, maybe you could use your cellphone for example; record some vocal samples and then upload them, and edit them to you hearts content! Did you know it's possible to record your voice by simply plugging your earphones into the MIC IN on your soundcard? [apparently you can use a speaker as a microphone too -- COULD SOMEONE VERIFY THIS?]  Even the built in mic that many laptops and PC's have for voice chat is perfectly adequate for this contest.

Of course, aside from sampling, there are also many talented people out there who can do live beats/music using only their voice ( beatboxing ), and also singers who have created complex recordings using multiple tracks of their own voice.  There are alot of You Tube videos like this, for example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO3jYSm1kRI  If you are talented enough to do that, then please enter this contest!

Your voice is an instrument.  When you record your voice and save it as a file, the possibilties of manipulating those sounds are as endless as with any type of audio sample.  You don't need to be able to sing; everyone is capable of generating sonic frequencies with their voice which can then be integrated into the world of digital audio production just like any sound!  It's actually quite easy to do, and also alot of fun.  But... can you create a masterpiece worthy of winning this contest? That is the challenge.  Some people have things like loop pedals as well with which amazingly complex vocal arrangements can be done just by 1 person.

It is a unique link that Image-Line gives to each of it's members. if someone wants to buy FL studio, they can use your affiliate link and get a 10% discount. And you get a 20% commission (which appears as virtual cash in your account). You can find your unique link and more information about it at the top of your Image-Line member profile page.  The fruit in my sig is my affiliate link.

Just a quick question . . . Does the whole song have to be only comprised of your voice or does it just have to have your voice sounds in the song with other things? Just curious. Above seems like you have to only use your own voice for the whole thing? Or I am dazed and confused and dont know what a chicken is HEEH.

Cool idea for a constest! I've been beatboxing for 10-15 years, so when I read the rules of the contest I was very psyched.

Yes, ALL of the sounds have to be your own voice.

What about whistling? It doesn't use the voice box, but then neither do many beatboxing sounds.

I was thinking the same thing WP. Which actually got me to thinking that it may be a good this for this contest that voice only and not lip sounds etc. Otherwise I fear it would turn into a beat-box vs bee-bop or something. I also think that people should take this competition seriously tho minus any joking. The voice is one of humans most powerful tools in life period. Now I aint gonna get too mushy now hehe.

WP - You can whistle with the voice. All one has to do is simply hum while whistling.

When I was recording my kick sounds I was thinking that the lip thing may not roll so I just put the ummph sound with it. I believe I have to re-record the hat sounds etc tho. Those were not actually my voice but my lips. Wasn't paying attention and realized later after I uploaded it lol.

I think that this one will be very interesting because, the fact the only the voice and not other sounds can be used. I may or may not actually enter this one. I already have all of Image Line plug ins and weather I win or not ( probably not ), someone else will get better use of them than me. Someone who does not have all of IL plugs.

Babbling again.  I hope that many enter this tho. It will help them in production, singing in some ways and also help them to learn that you dont have to know how to sing to use the voice in music. Maybe this might open up a whole new set of genres for the new age of music for the next few generations.

One last question from me lol.

Since this is a use your own voice contest, can we make single cycle wave forms and use them in the track? Way too many ideas in my brain LOL.
